Introduction

Fish Pulusu, also known as Chepala Pulusu, is a classic dish from Andhra Pradesh. This traditional fish curry is famous for its bold flavors, combining tanginess from tamarind with the richness of spices. It pairs perfectly with hot steamed rice and is a must-try for seafood lovers.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams fresh fish (Rohu or Catla pieces)

  • 2 onions (finely chopped)

  • 2 tomatoes (chopped)

  • 2 tablespoons tamarind pulp

  • 2 green chilies (slit)

  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste

  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder

  • 2 teaspoons red chili powder

  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds

  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds

  • Curry leaves

  • 3 tablespoons oil

  • Salt to taste

  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Preparation Method

Step 1: Clean the Fish

Wash the fish pieces thoroughly and marinate them with turmeric and salt. Keep aside for 10–15 minutes.

Step 2: Prepare Tamarind Extract

Soak tamarind in warm water and extract the juice. Keep it ready.

Step 3: Cook the Base

Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds. Once they splutter, add curry leaves and green chilies.

Step 4: Sauté Onions & Spices

Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown. Add ginger-garlic paste and cook until the raw smell disappears.

Step 5: Add Tomatoes & Masala

Add tomatoes, turmeric, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Cook until the oil separates.

Step 6: Add Tamarind Juice

Pour the tamarind extract and add salt. Let it boil for 5–7 minutes.

Step 7: Cook the Fish

Gently add the fish pieces and cook on low flame for 10–12 minutes. Do not stir too much to avoid breaking the fish.

Step 8: Final Touch

Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and let the curry rest for a few hours for enhanced flavor.

Tips for Perfect Fish Pulusu

  • Use fresh fish for the best taste.

  • Cook in a clay pot for authentic flavor.

  • Avoid over-stirring after adding fish.

  • Let the curry rest—it tastes better the next day.
